Small media player no longer functions

I keep quite an extensive collection of sound clips on my hard drive. WHen in
the folder where these files are stored I could highlight one and a small
media player would appear on the left hand side of the folder where I could
play these files from instead of double clicking the file and fully opening
Windows Media Player. Within the last few days this function has become
disabled. The player still appears but nothing happens.

That depends. If you had done it unknowingly then I assume that means you
did not install any of these Codec packs like Nemo and others. That is
good. So maybe that is not the issue here. Tell me does your Windows
Explorer ever crash when you select one of these video files? You can
always rebuild your Web View by this:

Start | Run | webvw.dll | OK | OK.

I am sorry like this:

Start | Run | regsvr32 webvw.dll | OK | OK. See if that fixes it.
