Hello,

I have installed Small Business Server but when I tried to promote it to a
"Member" server of existing domain, it says something like : "sorry, SBS is
limited..." etc.
Does it mean that I need to install ordinary W2000 server to have Member
server?

Regards,
Vladimir

Vladimir,

There are certain restricution placed on SBS2000.

1) It must be the Domain Controller. You can have other
DCs in the environment but the SBS2000 Server must hold
all five of the FSMO Roles. You can also install other
Member Servers ( File, Print, etc. ) into the environment
and eventually dcpromo it/them to a DC.

2) There can not be any trusts created with any other
domains. Essentially, you are an island with SBS2000.
You are a one domain / tree / forest Domain with SBS2000.

Does this help you? I am no SBS2000 Server expert but do
use it a several clients. All of these clients, however,
are one server situations ( money being the key factor ).

Did you also post this in the Small Business Server
NewsGroup?

Sorry I didn`t know about the group!

Anyway, I got it that it HAS TO BE DC, but...

Some time ago, I asked on one of these MS newsgroups about ISA firewall box
(2 NICs), what role this W2000 server should be to internal W2000 domain
(considering that it should be as safe as possible from Internet attacks and
any kind of instability), SO I WAS TOLD THAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEMBER
SERVER OF THE INTERNAL DOMAIN. It sounded logical since there is no local
administration and no AD changeable.
Now, ISA 2000 is a part of SBS and it just cannot be MEMBER SERVER !!!!.
That is not logical to me at all.
Or my logic is wrong?

Thanks and regards,
Vladimir

Vladimir,

While your logic may seem correct, for SBS2000 it does not
work. I mean, for the price that you pay for all these
apps there have to be some limitations, right?
