Hello,

We're using Windows Small Business Server 2000. I'm not
sure if the Shared Fax Service has been installed on our
server or not - I'm thinking not.

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm a newbie to
networking so please bear with me.

I want all of the desktops to be able to send/receive
faxes. In order to get this to work with the Shared Fax
Service, do I have to purchase an external fax modem for
the server? How does this connect to the server? And,
what kind should it be?

Thanks so much for your time!

Debbie

The shared fax service will work with either an internal or
external fax modem. What is important is to have a modem on
the compatibility list installed, preferably a good one.

Occasionally I have to reset our modem and it is very easy
to just turn it off then back on since it is an external
modem. No one in our office knows it is happening, their
faxes are just delayed a few minutes (unless I forget to
turn it back on). People faxing to us will not get an
answer while the external modem is turned off. The server
keeps chugging away.

An external modem usually attaches via a serial port
(probably most/all of the ones on the compatibility list)
but can attach via a USB port.
