small AV program needed to transport

I have been asked to help someone whose system is running amok with symptoms
that smell of a virus or trojan or ?.
Unfortunately his Norton Anti Virus isn't up to date and isnt dealing with
the culprit.
Now he cant get online to update the definitions etc.

Is there a small (preferably free or really inexpensive) anti virus utility
that I can dowload and update here at my machine
and take over there (on floppies or cd) and either run it from disk, or
install ?

F-Prot was recommended, and I could make emerg recovery disks with Art Kopps
uodater, but it apparently doesn't work on newer Windows systems (after 9x)
with ntfs.

Also AVG was recommended but he cant get online so we cant update the
definitions.

Any guidance appreciated.

Surprise...

Try this:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

Caution: it scans only for the most widespread malicious programs so it
won't catch everything.

There is a way to use my F-Pup program in this situation if you can
follow the below directions. You'd be aiming at running F-Prot DOS in
Safe mode on the ailing PC.

On a clean Win 9X/ME PC d/l F-Pup from my web site. Extract the files
to C:\F-PROT. Then invoke FP-UP.EXE. It will d/l F-Prot for DOS and
update the DEF files. Then use the AV disk creation feature. Do not in
this case create a boot disk. You will get two disks with files named
AV001 and AV002 on them.

Get out of FP-UP and copy CARVE.EXE and UNZIP.EXE from the F-Prot
folder to a third disk.

Now transport the three disks to the ailing PC. On this PC create a
C:\F-PROT folder. Copy the contents of all three disks to this folder.

In a DOS window change directory to C:\F-PROT and type:

CARVE /J AV.ZIP

This rejoins a original AV.ZIP file that had been split. Now type:

UNZIP AV.ZIP

You now now have a updated F-Prot for DOS in the folder which you can
use in Safe mode. Just type:

F-PROT C:\*.*

To scan the drive and see what it comes up with. To see the list of
command line switches available type:

F-PROT /?

Do not choose to disinfect or delete files until you assess the
situation and get more info if needed.

Not the most ideal approach but it reportedly works in many cases on
NT based OS.

Contact me (again) if you need further assistance.

I just tried out the suggestion I had made in my other response to
your post in this thread, and I noticed that my FPBOOT program is
available for use as well. It worked ok in this situation. It
simplifies the use of F-Prot DOS by affording a mouse commanded menu
of options. You can select to have it generate a report file and read
it while in the program.

Art,
I just followed your directions in your previous post and now have the 3 EBD
disks in hand (AV001,AV002, and the Carve.exe & Unzip.exe disk).
I was going to take these over to the ailing PC. Copy them to a new folder
in the root directory and follow the instructions to join and then unzip the
AV files and then launch F-Prot.
Correct so far ?

I'm unsure and unclear what to do with FPBOOT in this second post of yours.

Don't be concerned with the name of the proggy. It won't reboot the
PC. It just affords a easy means of setting F-Prot's scan options with
mouse clicks. When finished setting scan options the proggy shells
F-Prot (runs it) to scan drive C:
