sluggish performance after reformat hard drive

I have an IBM Netvista A30P computer with winxp installed
oem, and there is an indestructable partition containing
winxp in the hard drive. I decided to reformat the drive
(which brings me back to the state when I first bought
the mahcine) and first thing i did was a very thorough
windows update.

But when I opened up wmp9 ready to listen to some cds, i
noticed some strange slowing and alterations in playback
as if someone halves its speed in a tape recorder. To
double check whether it was a sound problem, I tried
playing the pinball game and again i noticed the sluggish
gameplay at once. It happens persistently (though not
dominant) and there were no other open programs, so it
wasnt a memory thing.

I can nopw also see similar slowed movement of the cursor
and other small things lilke screen changes and popping
of the 'start' menu etc. It appears like the computer is
aging much to quickly (its just a year old and warranty
from ibm passed coincidently) How did I get my computer
into this state? Is this a sign of the 'blaster worm' or
any other virsu?
