Sluggish laptop

I am a beginner to computers. I am using XP Pro on a Toshiba laptop. When I first began using my computer late last year, everything was running fine. Ever since, the whole system has gradually been slowing down. It has now slowed to the point of being frustrating. Do I need to re-install the operating system, or use the 'system restore point' instead? Is there a better response to my problem? Thanks to anyone who can help!
