Slowness

I have a relatively new pc that until recently would
launch programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, internet) very
quickly. It now takes very long for these to come up -
and quite often I get a Not-responding" message. The
only thing that was downloaded in thepast month were
windows updates. Any thoughts or things I should look
for?

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? In Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select Properties.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup.

4. Run Disk Defragmenter.

~~~~~~
Hope this helps.
If the previous suggestions don't work try
http://aumha.org/a/tshoot.htm
You don't mention it but hopefully you run a good anti-
virus program and have a firewall.
I ran disk defragmenter on Monday (first time I did that
ever and it took almost 13 hours). I emptied the OE
deleted files. I'll let you know how the other stuff
worked out. THanks again.
I had a similar problem. My computer was running so slow for weeks and I couldn't find any solution that worked. I tried everything (e.g. defrag, Adware, Spyware, Virus Scan, etc.) and nothing worked. I even tried the System Restore through windows but that didn't do anything. Here's what finally worked for me: Restart your computer and immediately begin pressing the F8 key a bunch of times during the reboot until you come to the "Safe Mode" menu. One of the options on the safe mode menu references "Restoring To The Last Known Good Configuration" which is somewhere in the middle of the screen and you can just arrow down to it. Now after doing this I had to go back and reinstall some Windows updates that were un-done during the restore. My computer works great now. I'm not a computer expert, but I think a file became corrupt during one of the original windows updates and that caused the slowness. I haven't had any issues with a slow responses since I did this restore. Hope this helps
