slowed by network adapter

when my network adapter is enabled , it ads an extra
minute before anything on my desktop will respond (when I
boot up). It seems to be waiting for something.
If the adapter is off, everything works just as soon as
the desktop comes up. If I then enable the card, it works
fine with no waiting time.
What's a mother to DO?

You are probably setup for DHCP and it is trying to obtain an IP from your
ISP/Network. Either obtain a static IP or chekc the settings for your NIC
to make sure they are correct.
