Hello. I'm running XP Home with all updates. My system has slowed down.
Programs take longer to load; even the start meunue takes several seconds to
fully pop up. Haven't installed anything new or downloaded anything
recently. I run disc clean-up, scandisc ( i know, its called something
else), and de-freag at least once a week. I don't have a virus. I don't have
a lot of programs running in the background. Anything else i should try?

Thanks

this is from Geek.com:

A security patch released by Microsoft on April 16th slows down machines
running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and certain third-party
applications. The patch addressed an issue related to a buffer overrun
vulnerability as documented in a security bulletin on the Microsoft website.

Microsoft has not yet made a replacement patch available, but will soon
provide documentation as to what variables contribute to the performance
issue when the patch is installed. Microsoft's current recommendation is for
users to keep the patch installed until one is available which addresses the
issue. Currently the only action a user can take to alleviate the
performance issue is to uninstall the patch.
