Diane

I read "slow" performance and read that we should turn off
the icons on the bottom right hand ... I believe that is
the start up menu, how do I turn them off??

Also, I have a hard time believing that is the only thing
that is making my computer run slow. I have a new 80 gig
hard drive.....but someone told me it could be that I
still have dial up for the net. Any suggestions because
this is frustrating, my old 133 is faster then this.

Thanks
Diane

Diane,

The icons on the bottom right hand are in the Tooltray, which is
generally used for background and minimised applications that one does
not want taking up space in the Taskbar.

Some of the icons in there are for applications started from StartUp,
in either the registry or groups. I find Startup Control Panel, from
Mike Lin (http://www.mlin.net/), which is free, to be very useful
here. It lets you add (drag and drop no less), remove, or simply
deactivate, anything in either of the 5 identified startup system
lists. Also Startup Monitor keeps programs from adding anything to
those 5 lists without your consent.

As far as slow performance goes, hard drive over utilisation would be
one possibility. Not very likely for a new 80G drive, unless you
really loaded it.

If you have dialup, that could explain the slow internet performance,
but slow overall?

Check your Task Manager display - how are you on cpu and memory
utilisation?

If you're on dialup, I'd bet you don't have a router for protection
(you could, but we'll work on that later). Malware could very well be
a problem - either something you downloaded, or a worm hit you thru
the network. Start immediately with Spybot S&D and HijackThis. Go to
SWI Forums for advice. Start here:
