Ever since I applied all the patches from the MS site for
my XP home as a result the virus scare recently my PC is
now dead slow, especially while using the internet (DSL).
My PC experience is now horrible. Short of blowing the
hard drive and return the system to the state it was
shipped by the manufacturer how do I get my speed back?

Neville,

Try running the Disk Defragmenter applet that ships with WinXP. It is in
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools.

1. Add memory to bring it up to 512MB.

How do you know he's not running more than this already?! Your crystal
ball's obviously working better than mine.

No crystal ball needed. Having only 128 or 256 MB of
memory is one of the primary causes of the situation the
OP described.

Yes, but he didn't state his RAM - hence my remark...

Are you suggesting that because he didn't mention the
amount of RAM he had I should not have suggested
he increase it? Or, is it just my wording you're picking
on? If the latter, perhaps you'd be happier not reading
my posts.

I just wanted to say thank you Bob for trying to help
someone out. It would seem that some people with a low
self esteem problem find the only way to validate
themselves is to degrade others. Gee, maybe we can all
gather at the orphanage later and throw rocks at the kids
in wheelchairs. (heavy sarcasm for those who didn't catch
it) Anyway it's people like you who make other people
happy when you suggest a fix and it turns out to be just
what the doctor ordered. Keep it up!

When did I "degrade you"? I never even replied to you - I replied to Bob
twice. Now this is your first warning - MS have a list of those who abuse my
name and any future postings they make are either very carefully scrutinised
or pulled. Don't say I didn't warn you...

Sorry, Bob, no...That was a poor choice of words on my part - please accept
my apologies. I didn't mean to criticise. I was just pointing out that the
RAM may not necessarily be his problem...

I'm sorry...

.
What ARE you talking about? I was thanking BOB for doing
a good job answering peoples questions and helping them
to solve problems. I can assure you that until now, you
were the farthest thing from my mind. I don't know what
you wish to accomplish by threatening me - "Now this is
your first warning" but if it makes you feel better so be
it. If my telling someone 'Good Job!' is going to get me
into trouble, then I guess I am a bad little woman (tsk,
tsk, tsk). Well anyway, I've wasted enough time on you.
Once again: GOOD JOB BOB!!! Thanks for helping people out!
