Well, you could install Windows 2K instead. I'm not
being facetious -- I've had to remove XP off of most
of my frustrated clients' PC's and retrofit either Win2K
or Win98 to gain back acceptible speed and reliability.
Retrofitting is a pain in the butt, although you can
usually rely on Intel for most of the system drivers
you'll need. I would try the list speed-up tricks in
the posted "Slow Computer" link first. One seemingly
unsolvable problem is XP's noticeable slow down after
several months of use, even if you don't install any
new software -- cleaning, defragging and such does little
in regaining speed. Me and some other tech friends think
this is related to all those "critical" updates that
Microsoft says you need, but roughly equivalent Win2k
PC's don't seem to share this trait despite their
likewise numerous required updates.

The reliability of XP hasn't been so hot either -- worse
than 2K and only slightly better than a well-tuned Win98,
and requiring far, FAR more troubleshooting time when there
is a problem than with any Win98 issue (avoid using NTFS
at all costs -- recovering data from it is far more
difficult on crashed PC's than it is with FAT32.) I suspect
many of the problems are with processing timeouts when XP
is running too slow.

FYI.
