Hi,

Can somebody please help me. We purchased this system
with Windows XP 2002 Home Edition pre-installed. Since
day 1 our computer has been slow logging on, launching
programs, moving from program->program, etc...

I'm thinking that we flat-out need more RAM to get better
performance, but before I go out and spend money that is
not necessary I wanted to make sure there is nothing else
wrong.

Here are some systems vitals:

Processor: Intel Celeron 1300GHz
RAM: 128MB
Current Paging File: 192MB
Max Paging File: 384MB
Windows XP 2002 Home Edition - current updates installed
Microsoft Office XP
AOL 7.0
*Tons of hard drive space
*No media software etc...
*Virus Free as of 11pm 12/1/03

Any feedback, advice, or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. I've never had a computer that was this
slow.

Thank you,
Cynthia

sorry, but you definetly need more ram. Xp needs at leat
256mb.
this would be the case if you upgraded to xp
check w/ others though, there might be another cause, I'm
not an expert

Well you certainly need more RAM. Windows XP needs at least 256MB of RAM for
decent performance, but you'll be happier with 512MB. A Celeron 1.3 GHz is a
pretty slow processor, but there's probably nothing you can do about that.

Manufacturers often stuff their computers with software that you didn't ask
for, and they configure this software to start with Windows and run in the
background. This really slows down a computer. To see what starts with
Windows, go to Start > Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and
click OK. Choose the Startup tab and you'll see the other software that
starts with Windows. Do you really need all that?

Lastly, unless you really like it, get rid of AOL. It's a huge program that
can really interfere with your computer's performance.

Hi Cynthia

I have similar problem with system being so slow.
we haven't found the common denominator yet, but I can assure you more ram
didn't fix it for me.
Presently we have a Gig of memory and still slow as a snail, but in your
case I beleive windows xp needs at least 256 mb to be the minimum

Good luck in finding the problem as many of us have the same with no solid
answer.

You might hear answers or suggestions such as defrag, scandisk,
spyware, regcleaners, indexing service, deleting temp files, delete prefetch
folder contents.
I have tried all of these things and many more only to still have the same
problem.

Windows XP is stable, but is Dog slow!
