Slow XP broadband internet performance - virus?

I have a 4 station XP workgroup with a high speed internet
connection hard wired thru a router.

For the last two weeks, the internet connection is at best
lousy. Slow to paint a page (if it doesn't time out),
stalled downloads, no ability to send and little to
receive e-mail.

If I plug a notebook into the router, it flies!

This sounds to me like some sort of a virus/worm that has
spread to all the machines thru the network.

I have done everything I can think of except a complete
melt and repour. Changed router, booted into safe
networking mode, run virus checks, SFC, etc.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? All ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark -

have all 4 machines on doing nothing, if you have lights
on the router, look at them, if they are blinking like
chirstmas lights at a Kmart Blue Light special, you have
a network problem. Unplug 1 at a time and see what
happens. Most likely you may be having collisions. Read
the documentation on the router and see if there is a log
you can look at. Most of the Lynksys ones have them.

An excellent suggestion!

I had one PC isolated on the router and still had the
problem. I took another and put it on another DSL
modem/router and it was OK.

Now I wonder what it could be about the one PC that could
cause this problem?

A client of mine had an issue almost just like yours. A
Bilkin Router was the cause. Put in a DI-604 from Dlink
and poof it was ok. Your last test proves you have a bad
componet on the LAN in question.
