I have been using Windows XP for about 18 months and have had to format the
C drive several times and reload the system and all of the programs on the
drive to regain operational speed. It seems that after about a month or so
of using the Windows system it begins to slow down and it seems take forever
for programs to load. Opening a folder is extremely long and it takes
several minutes to restart the computer. I presently have 256meg of ram and
am contemplating adding 512meg more in a hope that it will speed up the
system. Is this a reasonable scheme or is there a better way to keep the
system from slowing down so much.

Decrementing the system doesn't seem to help. I am using Norton Works 2004
to maintain good system integrity.

Thanks

An extra 256 mb RAM would help.

Have you allowed Windows to manage your memory without the introduction of any memory managers. Memory managers can lead to poor system performance!

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? In Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select Properties.

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup.

4. Run Disk Defragmenter.

You should investigate whether you have unnecessary programmes loading at start up / running in background. This a big topic. Start by telling us about the Norton products you are using. There are a number of potential areas of conflict.

Are you using Microsoft Office? If yes, which version?

Hope this helps.

If the computer starts running at acceptable speed, but gets
slower over time, your problem has nothing to do with how much
RAM you have. Neither installing more RAM nor reinstalling
Windows is the solution.

Something is wrong with your housekeeping. Defragging may help,
but my guess is that it's more than that. You may be accumlating
various pices of spyware that are slowing you down. Try running
Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy regularly.

I have put on Adware 6.0 and that helped

Thanks

Are you running the firewall, scanning regularly for evil
stuff and clearing temp files too.

I update and scan at least once a week with SpyBot and
AdAware, also McAfee anti-virus. I run Zone Alarm.

My system seems pretty fast to me.
