Hello,
I am not a network admin but trying to trace a network
problem. We have a VPN network with Win2000 machines and
the user are getting so slow, I am trying to figure out
where to start to trace the problem. I use pathping and it
shows me 100% packet loss but when I ping I get reply. Can
someone tell me what exactly pathping does, is packet loss
normal or not, what else I need to do to trace the
problem. If there is an online reference it would be
helpful.
Thanks,
Jim

Depending on the kind of connections the vpn will be slow, sometimes painfully slow
unless you have a high speed business package, and the more users trying to access
the worse. Try also using tracert to see where the hangup is. If you are using a vpn
server in your network, look in the Event Viewer for any errors that may relate. If
you are using DSL be sure and try to reduce your MTU setting to around 1400 on the
router or dsl connectoid. There may also be a log file that you can view on the rras
server in the \winnt\system32\logfiles folder that may help. If this is a fairly
sudden problem, it may be worthwhile to replace the network card on your vpn server
or reset your vpn endpoint device if using one and look at it's logs also. I had a
cable modem at home and a dsl modem at my business and my vpn was very slow just for
one vpn connection. It would not hurt to contact your ISP also though they usually
blame your equipment or configuration.--- Steve
