Aldi,

It sounds like you may have a couple issues here, that your hard drive needs
to be defragmented, and that you have many applications loading when you log
on, but not enough physical memory so the page file on your hard drive is
busy. So technically, you could have three possible issues; you might need
some memory. It's in my personal experience that Windows XP runs good at
256MB RAM or higher.

Let's start with checking if you have a defrag issue. Right-click on my
computer, select Manage. When the Computer Management console launches,
make sure your Storage options are expanded and select Disk Defragmenter.
Select a drive from the list, and click Analyze. This will tell you whether
or not your hard drive needs to be defragmented. If you need to , go ahead
and defragment your drive.

The next step is to see which items are starting up when you log on to your
system. Click the Start button, select Run. In the run line, type
"msconfig" (w/o the quotes) and press <ENTER>. Click on the Startup tab.
Here you will find a list of all the items that get started up when you log
in. You can see there are check boxes next to each item. If you uncheck
and item, it will not load when you log on until you actually manually load
it. My general rule of thumb is to not uncheck items running from a Windows
folder, items that are obviously my antivirus software, and items that are
obviously my pointer and media devices. Uncheck items that you feel
comfortable disabling and click Apply. Once you click OK, you will be
prompted to reboot for changes to take effect. Try it out.

If you find that you shut something off that you need, you simply go back
into MSConfig, and re-check the item.

Hope that works for you! Let me know if it does!
