If you are using a dial-up connection this to to be
expected. The cumulative size of the two files that make
up the definition files is about 4 MBs. Trying to
download these two files using dial-up is like trying to
run a marathon with a ball and chain attached to both
legs, painful and slow!
The actual size of the two files for the current
definition set is 4,133,532 bytes (4,133.532 KBs).
Assuming a storage rate of about 4.5 KB/s, this means the
download should take about 15 minutes, give or take, with
a dial-up connection. My broadband connection's storage
rate is about 552.6 KB/s. This means that it usualy
takes about 10 - 20 seconds for me to download the
updates.
The same applies to trying to download updates for Ad-
Aware. When I used a dial-up connection (oh the agony!)
to download the updates, it took about 5 - 10 minutes to
download. When I finally got RoadRunner, it took only 5 -
10 seconds!
Since the price of most high-speed Internet connections
is about $40 and the cost of most dial-up connections is
about $15-25, then the people using a high-speed
connection are definitely getting a better connection
speed-to-price ratio. Ever since I went to college, I
just can't go back to the regular dial-up Internet, it's
TOO SLOW!
The real pain is trying to do anything online using a
dial-up connection.
