Slow to create new mail

I notice that when I want to create a new mail message in Vista Windows Mail
that it takes about 20 seconds for the mail message box to open before I can
type an address or any text into the message box. The same is true when I
reply or forward messages. I've tried deleting excess folders and emails in
case it was a memory problem, but it hasn't worked.
My computer is an HP Pavilion dv9205 and about 6 months old.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
