I have a computer that was given to me by my sister. When I got it it had a
lot of stuff on it i didn't need, so i deleted it. I put basic RR on it and
it didn't seem to really go as fast as I thought it should so I put standard
RR on it and it's still not going any faster. When I try to go from one page
to another it takes awhile for it to change.....the system runs slow. I hope
I explained this so someone could understand me. I'm not that into computers
but am trying.

Thanks

If RR refers to Road Runner I would go to their website and they
have tools you can use to determine speed and best settings for your
specific computer.

It is a used computer but new to you. Flatten and rebuild. Boot using
the Windows XP installation CD, have it format the partition, and
install a *fresh* copy of Windows in it.

I'm going to assume that flatten and rebuild means delete everything, use a
installation cd, not sure what having it format the partition means. she
didn't give me the cd...had no idea as to where it was. The system is
registered so can I purchase a copy from HP?

I also have a couple of other questions:

1. I have a favorites folder with personal stuff in it, how do I save this
before I clear the system?

2. If I have some sort of virus on here, would cleaning out the system get
rid of it?

Thanks again

Before you do anything check what the potential is.

What is the CPU and how much RAM does the computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Hope this helps.

Don't know what model of computer you have. All you said so far is
"HP". Did you go to HP's site and enter the model number to go find an
online manual (assuming you don't have one since sis didn't give you
anything with the hardware)? It will tell you how to restore the system
back to its factory state. If the restore requires CDs either sis
didn't give them to you (which means she did NOT include Windows and all
you got was hardware) or you have to follow the instructions in the
manual on how to create recovery/restore CDs. Could be the image is in
a hidden partition on the hard disk and you run their program to burn
the restore CDs. When you use them, everything in the OS partition gets
wiped (formatted) and a fresh copy of Windows is placed there. Again,
find the manual and read it on how to restore the computer.

For saving your personal data files, copy them to floppy, burn to CDs,
save to an external USB hard drive, copy to a different partition than
where the OS is installed now, save them to online storage, copy to a
USB thumb drive.
