I have XP Pro Installed on my pc. My problem is the cpu is showing 100% usage most of the time even though I am not running any applications. I have done all of the updates, defragmentation and also run the virus scan. When I start any files or applications the task manager shoots up to 100% and the system is very very slow when loading. Can any one offer any suggestions on fixing this problem and speeding up the system.

Thanks in Advance

Open the Task Manager and select the Processes tab. Post back with the names of the processes that occupy most of the processor's time. Note: This list is updated in something close to 'real time', so the numbers will be changing continuously.

I have the same problem, and it's always the process
called avifile.exe that's at a high usage. What is this
file, and what can I do about it?

Hi,

I am also experiencing a problem as are others (Marie,
Dick Shrewsbury, ogi, Courtney, Pat Nolan, Dan, Bill W,
Keith, Mario, Asvin, David Brewster, Yatty, Allen, Chris)

Dick, Allen, Mario, and I all get temporarily cured by a
restart of the computer. Do you? This seems to be a
common condition. Dick gets anywhere from a minute to an
hour of computer use before its unusably slow. I've had
2 incidents: Nov 18 and Nov 21 with maybe 8 usable hours.

We also have the CPU in the 90% range when it is slow and
nothing is open/running.

Look for posts with subjects of
Slow computer
High CPU usage

I feel like its a new, undocumented virus thingy :(

Hi,

I tried rebooting and run into a whole new problem. While rebooting I got a
message saying a "DLL msgina dll failed to load". I took me hours trying to
get my system operating again. It is still not 100% up, but it is
operational. "still slow" I will eventually have to get another computer
and back up all of my information on cds. I will then tinker with this one
to try ty figure out the problem.

Wish me luck

H.P.
