From the time I turn on my laptop computer (Presario 2500)
with Windows XP OS, it takes approx 3 minutes until the
main screen (desktop) apears and the light showing the
hard disk spinning stops. I then can pick a program I
want to use. I've done virus checks, ad-ware, and spyware
checks and all give me the O.K. Any help is appreciated.

chkdsk, defrag, run HDD diagnostics, don't put programs or files on the
desktop it should only have shortcuts there. Clean out the prefetch file once
and a while. Clean out all temp files and folders. Get a good registry
cleaner. RegCleaner for example. So a search for BootVis and download and
run. Turn off unecessary services www.blkviper.com is a good site for that.
Load only the programs you need immediately like your anti-virus. Turn off
all autoupdates and always manually update. SpeedXP is free and tunes many
settings for honest and noticeable system improvements. }:~)

Go to START, RUN, type in MSCONFIG
Select the STARTUP tab.
Everything that is checked is what's starting up when you
boot. Uncheck everything you don't need to run when you
start Windows. On most systems, the antivirus auto-
protect is the only application that really needs to be
run at startup.
Good luck!
