It takes approx. 2 minutes to boot up my computer. For
most of that time the screen is black. I have a
relatively new Dell (6 months) with tons of RAM and
processing speed. Any thoughts?

I have many thoughts but none on your subject. Is waiting
2 minutes really so bad? Does the computer work fast
after it boots? If you want it to boot faster check what
programs are starting when the computer loads.
All the best. :-)

Trying emptying your prefetch folder. Del everything in the folder and
windows will rebuild. Had mine hang like that. Its at c:\windows\prefetch

XP has been getting slower and slower for me over the
last year. Let us know if this fix worked for you!
Thanks!

Yes, slow startup is definitely a big deal, especially when you just
paid for a new fast machine so you wouldn't have to put up with a slow
one. A two-minute boot is simply ridiculous for any XP machine.

Can I correctly assume this is not how long it took when you first got
it? And what do you mean by "tons", exactly?

The most common causes of slow startup I know of are apps waiting for
network and/or internet services, especially malware. How long does
it take to startup in safe mode or diagnostic mode? LMK.
