Slow startup when Computer Browser service is running

Hi

I have a small network to connect, two XP systems (one 32bit, the other
64bit) and a Linux box.

The XP systems are both fresh installs, but they just don't want to talk.
(net itself is ok, ping etc)

I've tried combinations of runnning the Computer Browser service, and of
using / not using the lmhosts file.

I get combinations of the whole net not being available wth the permission
error thing, or one seeing two systems and the other seeing the other two
(if that makes sense), then of being able to force a system to see another
by entering the system name into an Explorer address bar, and then of having
that not work.

The most annoying is that it sometimes take a long (10min) time to boot, and
that something will work for a while and then stop working without any
intervention.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a guide to doing this? Better yet, are their
tools, preferably GUI (and free...) that let me see what's going wrong?

Thanks for any advice, it's getting frustrating.

Rob

Hi,

Please check msconfig.exe to see the startup applications!
Or you can download bootvis from Microsoft to trace boot up time!

I hope, it helps!
