Hi y'all

I disconnected my DSL-cable during startup (tip I found in this NG) and my system is up and running in no time

Supposedly, XP is looking for networking connections during startup and this is what takes it so long..

Hi Michael

I thought that cable was supposed to be 'always on'. If you disconnect - it surely defeats that object? I may have missed something here. Cable modems look for a DHCP server on startup which is normal. The time taken depends on your ISP.

Another suggestion I heard about a year ago was to turn on the power to the
cable modem before turning on the computer. This gave the cable modem time
to do its thing then there would not be any problems when the computer
started and looked for hardware, etc.
