Slow Startup on Xp

I have been experiencing a slow startup of my system. I am using Windows XP. After turning on the computer, it can take up to 2 minutes before the Windows chime is heard; the desktop is fully displayed. After the chime is heard, the programs are responsive in their normal fashon.
Any suggestions?
 
This time is dependent on the different programs that have to load prior to
startup. XP is not known to startup quickly. Two minutes is not that long.
