Slow Startup / No Internet

PLEASE HELP!

A few days ago, my computer started to mess up. It loaded up the login
screen normally but froze soon afterwards. For 20 minutes, the monitor was
blank with only the desktop wallpaper visible. There was no icons, no task
bar, nothing. It took nearly 5 minutes of clicking both mouse buttons and
pressing random keys on the keyboard to make the computer come to life 15
minutes later. A message box from Norton Internet Security came up saying
that my TCP/IP protocol was uninstalled.

That brings me to my next problem. After the computer finally loaded, I
received the message mentioned above. I tried to restart the connection and
repair it. I even uninstalled Norton Internet Security but nothing worked.
Next, I tried to reinstall my TCP/IP protocol. I am a bit confused at this
point because there are three options of installation: Client, Service, and
Protocol. I selected "protocol" after looking at all the options and
installed the one that Internet Explorer 6 provided. After restarting the
computer, my internet connection seemed fine, but it still wouldn't work. I
looked at my computer's IP address and it turned out that I didn't have one.
I have no idea what to do at this point. My internet connection works fine
when I transfer the cable to another computer so it must be a problem with my
computer. I think that the slow startup is related to this problem. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Here is some extra information. I have a Dell PowerEdge 400SC with Windows
XP. My modem is Bellsouth DSL and I have a Linksys router connecting the
modem to the computer. Everything on my computer works fine except for the
Internet and the startup. If you need any extra info., please ask.

This may be caused by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware, MSAS and/or Spybot Search & Destroy to remove
it.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta)

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Also download a winsock repair tool, to repair what may be a broken in your
TCP/IP stack and it's causing part of your problems -

Winsock repair tools:
LSPFix- all versions of Windows http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip
Winsock2 Fix- Win98, ME
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

If you have XP SP-2 go to Start...Run and type in "netsh winsock reset" (no
quotes), click Okay.

If you don't have XP SP-2 or the above is no joy.....

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs.
Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

Or if you have IE 6 SP-2 you can do this within the browser:

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the
spyware cleaners above don't have in their databases yet. In that case....
