Good morning Microsoft!
A cry for help!
Back in December 2002, my son and I were having problems
with getting into the Internet so my son installed a
fresh copy of XP so we have two versions on the machine.
Is it possible to remove the original version or the
second version of XP without destroying all the files?
Would it be better just to format the hard drive and
start again? If so, how is that done?
For the past year the computer has slowly but surely and
taken a longer time to boot up. I used to be able to
make a cup of tea before the sign-on screen was created -
now I have time for lunch as well.
In addition, when I log on it takes so long that I have
time to take the dog for a walk around the golf course
before I can start down loading my e-mails.
Originally I blamed the NTLWorld Internet Broadband
system that is causing me problems but now I have my
doubts. When I boot up the machine, there is
immediately signs of data transfer through the modem as
if the machine is logging on to another machine somwhere
in the WWW.
Could this be a cause of my problems? I've tried booting
the machine with the modem disconnected and it takes
longer because the machine is looking for the modem.
This does not improve my productivity at all.
The company IT department talks about IRQ conflicts etc. -
something that I don't understand. They say that I have
got to clear the conflicts to enable the machine to boot
up quicker. How do I do this?
Last night I tried re-installing XP again in accordance
with your instructions. During the repair installation,
I had a Pop-up telling me that "procedure point GetIUMS
not located in dynamic link MSDART.DLL". What is this
and how does it affect the operation of the machine?
Eventually the installation was completed and the machine
is still the same.
When I go into the Internet, my selected Home Page is the
MSN default one. I keep getting somethin
called "Zestyfind" coming up when I entered the Net. I
blocked that using the Norton and now when I go into the
internet, it tells me that it cannot find the link. I
then select "home Page" and up pops the MSN home page as
normal. What is wrong. Is there something in the links
that automatically selects Zestyfind automatically and
will not allow my computer to go into MSN home page as
selected.
I'm in the office on my work machine - same
specification - and I boot up and am on line in less than
two minutes. I'd like the same performance from my home
offfice as well, please!
Please e-mail instructions to this address so that I can
work on the machine tonight, your work hours coincide
with mine so that I find it extremely difficult to talk
to you at home. On Saturday last I was unable to remain
on the phone long enough to speak to you and had to go
shopping with the wife!
