Whenever I turn on my computer, it takes about 5 minutes to boot up and am
unable to access programs (obviously) during that time. I frequently am
starting and closing down my computer during the day and find this terribly
inconvienient - I think I may have to disable some programs from starting
automatically, but do not want to make any changes until I have a better idea
of what I have to do and what may be causing this problem - can anyone help?

my fist suggestion is to use standby or hybernate to reduce the amount of
time requried to reboot. Second clean your prefetch (delete contents of
{windows dir}\prefetch), fist time after doing that computer will take longer
to boot but not having to filter threw all the unuesed info will speed up
future boots. Theird Suggestion is to defragment. Easiest way to stop many
programs from botting is remove them from the startup directory in your start
menu. Download a spyware removal tool and clean out any you might have. They
often auto boot at start up and slow down your system (I suggest spybot -
search and destroy)
