I recently installed the paid version of AVG 8.0 Although the program works
well, I have noticed that my start up time has increased from 1 minute to 4
minutes.
Does anybody have a similar experience or a solution?

AVG has become 'bloatware'.

Good luck :)

AV has to scan every program before it is allowed to execute.
It will necessarily take additional time to do this.

As to whether or not a 4 to 1 increase in time is normal, I don't
know. Maybe someone else can do comparisons for you.

Look under Tools/Advanced Settings/Schedules and make sure that you haven't
selected "Action based......On computer start-up."

Is this a new computer? If an old computer - you were running without AV
protection?? If so you are likely infected with one, or more, bits of
badware.

And somehow none of it showed its ugly face UNTIL Harry installed AVG,
right???

You have either a reading problem or a retention problem. I'm being
kind.

All good stuff.

I know.
I note however he has installed the Pro version and has therefore probably
paid for it.

Irrelevant since impressively better alternatives are freely available.
AVG is not so bad that you'd throw good dollars away to replace it.

It does not matter; The money is gone! The available alternatives are free.
Take the earlier advice, check what is being scanned at startup and install
free Win-Patrol to delay the AVG start-up.

It only delays the inevitable removal of AVG.

I note your comments and point out that NONE of the alternatives are,
in my opinion, better than AVG. That is not to say AVG is an impressive
peice of Antivirus software, I rate it very low on the list. However
it IS better than Avira Free, which rates lower than AVG free on the
list of next to useless programs, why should he trade down from
something he has paid for just because your alternative is free. Also
Spyware removers are just that, they remove infections. An anti-virus
is supposed to prevent infection.

I have seen no indication in Harry's posts that he believes he has an
infected computer. An infection usually manifests itself in ways other
than a slow boot.

He came to this forum seeking advice not to be told he is an idiot for
not doing what he has been told to do. A lot of advice given so far has
been based on people pushing their own opinions, not listening to the
problem,.
Thx Norm, you are right, I have read all the comments/suggestions, but none
has so far solved the problem.
BTW, what is your suggestion for a top notch AV program, free or otherwise?

Uninstall then reinstall using the "custom" option and uncheck the "link
scanner" (you don't need it). That module has been a royal pain in the @ss
since it appeared and will most definitely cause slow startups.

Thx for the tip, it makes quite a difference indeed.
