I have 5 versions of svchost running and one is using 20,000 K many more
times the usage on any other workstation. I am having serious speed
problems and wonder if this might be an explanation.

You often get more than one version of some processes running as many
services are sometimes handled by only one program, using different
parameters.

The best solution I can think of is disabling some services:
1. Open the Computer Management console (right-click My Computer & click
Manage)
2. Go to Services & Applications\Services in the tree
3. Turn off ones you don't need by right-clicking it, going to Properties
and setting it to Manual (the safe option) or Disabled (if you know you will
never, ever need it)

If you have a stand-alone PC or one in a workgroup (i.e. not on a corporate
domain network) you can disable the NT doman services:
· Messenger (this is NOT MSN)
· IPSEC Policy Agent
· Remote Registry
· Net logon
· Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service
· DNS Client
· Distributed Transaction Coordinator
QoS RSVP
· NT LM Sec Support

And some others you can disable:
· Uninteruptable Power Supply (if you do not have a power backup system
connected (e.g. APC BackUPS or SMartUPS)
· Wireless Config (if you have no wireless network)
· Internet Connection Sharing (if not used)
· Alerter
· RunAs Service (if you don't use program aliases - if you don't understand
you probably don't use them)
· Smart Card & Smart Card Helper

Look through the descriptions and look for others you don't use.

If your system stops working, you can always re-enable them.

You must be an administrator to change these settings.
