Slow Slow Slow XP!!!

For no apparent reason (or so it seems) Windows slows to a
snails pace or slower. Windows Task manager "performance"
shows CPU usage as 100% but no aplications running.
Processes show that hardly any applications are taking up
CPU space. I have checked for Trojans, Viruses etc. but
none show up. If I close the computer down ( which I have
to do by Ctl-alt-del) and reboot then the problem
disappears. I have 512Mb with 1.7Ghz AMD
can anyone suggest a solution.

One possibility is that a service is hogging the CPU - I recently found
terminal services (necessary for Remote Assistance) had gone crazy on an XP
Home installation. Had to disable it, as we couldn't find a fix (despite
days of research) and a rebuild wasn't an attractive option.

I found which service was causing the problem using Process Explorer from
www.sysinternals.com. I found one instance of SVCHOST was hogging most of
the processor. Looking inside, I could see that the termsrv.dll thread was
the culprit. If I killed that, everything (including the LSASS.exe instance
that was also wild) calmed down. Great tool.
