Slow Since Reformat

Ever since I reformatted and reinstalled XP, the computer
has been running very slow. If I try and copy many files
at once it lags, and when looking at listboxes, among
other things. I was looking at one of the system
monitors, and the memory/CPU usage skyrockets, when
normally it wouldn't.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?

I haven't been online with the computer yet, I probably
should've clarified that. Could spyware/adware/trojans
still be a possibility?

Additionally, in my latest reformat (yes, there has been
a few), i created a 10gig partition *just incase* i
wanted to try out a *nix OS, and it seems the comp is
even slower with that partition in.

set your PC for best performance. By default windows is
set to let windows choose the best settings.
Right click my computer/properties/advanced/system..
Did you install XP from a retail version or a restore CD?

Thanks, that helped a little bit for now. And I
reinstalled XP from the CD that came with my PC...so a
restore CD I guess. Another problem that also helped a
bit, was that I had to install nVidia Memory
Controllers. I dont know what they do, but my mom has
the same PC, and hers had them and mine had 'standard
memory controllers,' so I installed them.

I'm not sure what else I need to figure out to get this
back to full speed. It's pretty aggravating being back in
the stone ages.

ALSO, my CPU usage peaks a lot whenever I do anything. I
haven't even tried running any games yet, I can't imagine
I'll even be able to in this state. Just switching from
this window to mirc made my usage go up to ~30%. And
moving the task manager itself got 40%+. Anyway I'm
ranting, any help would be appreciated ;)
