Slow shutdown

It can take anything from 5 to 35 seconds for XP to close down completely.
It doesn't seem to fit any pattern either. Are there default settings that
can be altered to cure this?

The reason why there is no pattern is that it depends upon what you were
doing and what was previously open before shutting down. XP spends this
time cleaning up after itself, something it does much better than previous
versions of Windows, especially the 9x versions. This is by design in order
to help maintain a more stable environment.
