Slow Shutdown

Client's PC is slow shutting down. This started when he left his former
employer and started working at home.

HP Portable
WinXP SP2
Formerly in Windows domain (have since put into workgroup)
Formerly used Cisco VPN software (removed)

It takes about 2 minutes after hitting Start/Shutdown for the prompt to
appear. Then another minute or so before it completely shuts down.

It doesn't always do this though. Very random, but mostly after long uses
(6-8 hrs.), but I've seen in little as 20 minutes with no apps being used.

Any ideas?

TIA - Jeff

It thinks it's disconnecting from a network, I suspect. Open Network
Connections and remove any associated with the business.

Did that already - there was also a dial-up connection that was not being
used.

I sense it's something with the old network, but I'm not sure what else to
remove/fix.

I looked at that site prior, but it was not much help.

I don't know what else might do the slowdown, but there is a command that
will put the system down like a clicked light switch.

start/run, (or create shortcut to command)
shutdown -f -t 0

sweet - I'll give it a whack

thanks

A machine owned by a colleague of mine exhibits the same behaviour, but
is still present in the domain and has the Cisco VPN client.
That unfortunate combintation causes a multitude of problems because of
the virtual network adapter that is installed by the Cisco VPN client.
Symptoms include the inability to properly use the Microsoft ISA Server
Firewall Client (Won't detect ISA), slow network connections, slow
bootup/shutdowns, faillure to setup new VPN connections through Network
Connections in Control Panel; either logged into the domain or locally.
I advised him to bring in the machine for reinstallation; as our current
network setup no longer requires the Cisco VPN client.
All my other machines untouched by Cisco remain unaffected.
