I reinstalled Windows after a hard drive failure. Prior to the install the
machine shut down in the order of fifteen to twenty seconds. The machine
shuts down now in sixty to seventy seconds.
During the shut down Windows displays the placard " Saving Your Settings" .
The placard is on for most of the shut down period..
All files are shut down before the "Shut Down" is engaged..
I installed a new Virus program on the new install, "McAfee". Mcafee has not
answered my e-mail as how to disable this program .I do not want to
uninstall the program if I can avoid it..
Has any one some suggestions as to how to remedy this long shut down?

Thank You
John Horton

Couple of things:

1. Run the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service available from MS at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

2. start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative
Template System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user
profile ... set enabled and to, say, 5 ... (default if not configured is
60!)

Ours does the same, we noticed the more security updates( after sp4) that
were installed the longer it takes to shut down and boot up. We have a long
placard wait on saving your settings and another for networks. I use
Kaspersky, I don't think Mcafee is too bad ( stay away from symantec)
I would be haapppyy for only a 70 sec wait

Thanks to Sid,Marcin and mc! Sid's method worked and the computer shuts down
pronto! The file "gpedit" is not on my computer for step #2.
Thank you
