After patching my Windows 2000 system with the blasterworm fix, I have
noticed it takes much longer for the system to shutdown. It stays on the
saving your settings screen longer than before the fix. Has anyone else
noticed this and is there a solution. Thanks.

Use a firewall and AV software and a properly patched system and don't get
infected with worms/viruses/Trojans?

Not sure how that answers my question. I was never infected with the
blasterworm, I'm running AV software and I'm behind a router. I patched to
be safe, but it is causing a shutdown problem, and I'm wondering if anyone
else is having the problem and if there is a solution. Thanks.

Look in your application event log. My guess is you'll see events from
source userenv with event id 1000. If you call those up they'll indicate
that your profile failed to unload because of Access is denied. Lots of
people are getting those.

If you are having this problem you should know that it is caused by some
service or system software (like winlogon or some software in one of those
processes) holding on to hives (ntuser.dat or usrclass.dat). In either case
you'll get the above information.

If you interested I have written a freeware service which deals with this
particular problem. To accomplish this the service monitors for the system
to try to unload a profile. When that happens it insures no application is
holding on to hives (it does this by releasing any hold on them). The
system will then continue with the process of unloading the profile. The
service logs an event in the system telling what service or system process
was holding on to the hive so you know it is working (beside the fact that
logoffs are much faster).

Many people have used it to resolve this problem. Please write me via email
if you are interested in the service.

goto Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs > Change/Remove Programs
and see if Q329170 is
listed as an
update if it is remove it.

plus

start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative
Template
System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user
profile ... set
enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!

There appears to be a hotfix available from MS (thanks Neo)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814770

but you will have to telephone MS to order it.
