my server is a 200 server with 1GB of memory and works fine every day
in the last 2 weeks, one a week the server doesn't respond to the clients'
it respond but it is so slow that it takes more then 5 minuts just to logon
on and it doesn't map the network drivers and so on.

the only way it's to do a reboot to the server and the problem dissapers.

on the logons i can't fine any thing that can help to see what is the

Dear Luis,

Thank you for your post.

My name is Laura and it is my pleasure to work with you on this post. I
understand that the server may respond to the logon requests of clients
very slow. This issue sometimes occurs. In addition, after you reboot the
server this problem disappears.

From the description, it seems that this issue occurs when the CPU or
memory resources are used up or the network is crammed. Before we go any
further, please answer the following questions so that we can have a better
idea as to the exact problem:

- How often does this problem occur?
- Are there any rule? If this issue occurs regularly, please check whether
you have any scheduled task to run at that time.
- Please describe the network and domain configuration in detail.

The following is my suggestions:

1. Please check the CPU and memory usage in Task Manager to see whether the
system is short of resources when this problem occurs. Meanwhile, you can
identify which processes are using too many resources. In addition, you can
use the Performance Monitor to monitor the CPU and memory usage.
Performance Monitor is a tool included in Administrative Tools of Windows
2000 server. For example, the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article
describes how to use Performance Monitor to trouble shoot high CPU problem
of MTS or COM+ process:

258833 HOWTO: Troubleshoot High CPU Utilization of an MTS or COM+ Process
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=258833

2. Please use the Network Monitor to monitor the network traffic in the
network. It is possible that the network traffic jam causes the server to
respond slowly. To learn how to use Network Monitor to capture the network
traffic, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

148942 How to Capture Network Traffic with Network Monitor
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=148942

3. Please use Anti-virus application to check whether computers are
infected with viruses.

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let us know. I am glad to be of
assistance.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Laura Zhang

Dear Luís,

Thank you for your update.

I understand that this problem occurred once a week and the latest software
update is the installation of Anti-virus software.

Based on our experience, Anti-virus applications sometimes may affect the
proper operation of Windows 2000 server, such as the replication service
and the Exchange backup and maintenance. As this issue seems to coincide
with the installation of Exchange, I suggest that you uninstall Anti-virus
software to test this issue again.

From your description, this issue occurs once a week. It indicates that the
basic configuration of this server is correct. However, due to some
resource limitation or other factors, the server responds slowly. We can
identify whether the system is lack of memory or high CPU by checking the
Task Manager and the Performance Monitor when this problem occurs. I would
like to confirm that the screen shot attached was captured when this
problem occurred. Otherwise, the system resources usage should be normal.

Windows 2000 server replication and other applications may create network
traffic. We cannot identify that the network traffic is little by the users
currently logon to the system. This is the reason that I suggest that you
use the Network Monitor to monitor the average packets traffic when the
problem occur and during normal state.

In addition, please check whether the system backup, Windows 2000 server
replication, Exchange backup and maintenance and the scan virus operations
have any conflictions.

Have a nice day!

Dear Luis,

Thank you for your update.

I understand that when the problem occurs the network traffic is slow. This
may indicate that network jam is not the problem. As the screen shot was
taken when the server is running fine, it may be unable to provide us more
information on this issue. The process and thread information that are
taken when the problem occurs would be more desirable.

I understand that you have concerns in uninstalling the anti-virus
software. As some problems are caused by anti-virus application, I
suggested that you uninstall it to test. If you have ISA or similar
firewall software, you can configure the firewall settings to protect your
network.

Based on my knowledge, there are no existing commands available to stop and
then start Information Store Service. However, you can use the "Net start"
and "Net stop" commands to create a .bat file. You can use this .bat file
to achieve the requirement. You can include the following commands in the
bat file:

net stop msexchangeis
net start msexchangeis

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know. I am glad to be of
assistance.

Have a nice day!

Dear Luís,

Thank you for your update.

I have checked your screen shot; however, as it is not sorted by memory or
CPU usage we can get little information from them. To trouble shoot this
problem efficiently, we need to collect more information so that we can
analyze this issue more efficiently:

1. Does this issue occur for all client computers and for all user account?
2. What applications are running on the client computer?
3. Please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to enable
user environment debug logging on the client computer:

221833 How to Enable User Environment Debug Logging in Retail Builds of
Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=221833

When this problem reoccurs, please send the "userenv.log" file to my email
address: (e-mail address removed).

4. To insure we are troubleshooting this issue, we will need to gather a
performance monitor log that confirms you are experiencing a memory leak.
Please perform the following steps to begin monitoring the performance:

1) Open Performance Monitor on the server.
2) Create a Performance Monitor log file...

1. Expand "Performance Logs and Alerts"

community. If you would like to resolve it efficiently, you may need to
create a new incident from the following link:

If anything is unclear or you have any concerns, please feel free to let me
know. I am glad to be of assistance.

Have a nice day!
