Hi,

My weekly scan with Symantec's Norton Antivirus 2002 has suddenly become
very slow. It used to take 40 minutes or so, now it's over 5 hours and
still not finished. I use Windows XP on a 2.4 GHz computer.

Anybody any idea what could be the matter?

Something else may be running (use task manager to see who is using the
CPU &/or IO capacity) .. virus scanning is a low priority task, and many
other things will 'bump' the scanner (even most viruses and spyware.

If that isn't it, then you may have a hardware problem - disk drives
reverting to PIO mode (instead of DMA-whatever) are a favourite. You
should be able to see that if you examine the disk controller entries in
device manager - primary/secondary EIDE controller channels, advanced
settings tab, make sure 'current mode' is some form of DMA - higher the
better. Be surprised if you hadn't noticed that in other use though.

Defrag your hard disk.
