Slow response

Whenever I open "My Computer" or use any application that searches the computer (or even try the URL address box in explorer) it takes up to 5 minutes (not kidding) for the system to respond with a list of items. This is also true if I search devices from Control Panel (like Scanners & Cameras). I just recently upgraded from Win2K to WinXP and never had this problem with Win2K. My PC is not exceptionally fast (1GHz), but I expect there is some other problem somewhere

Any ideas what could be causing this

What network connections are available to the system? About the only thing that takes as long as you indicate are things like ZIP
drives left empty and network connections to other machines for file sharing.

I removed the network connects and it boosted quite a bit, but I still have to wait up to 2 minutes for My Computer to come up. The seach flashlight icon seems to seach for something (no hard disk activity) and eventually it comes up, but still takes WAY too long

Next time the system is slow, use Task Manager to see if
you can identify any task(s) that are hogging the CPU....
