Slow response time

Can somebody please give me a clue as to what might be
causing this problem? We are experiencing an inordinate
response time when we try to bring up a file or brows a
directory on our network. We are running Windows 2000
Adv. Server and Windows 2000 workstations all of which
have Service Pack 4 applied. This problem seems to occur
with files or directories that have not been loaded or
browsed for an hour or so. I really can't nail down a
period of time that it takes before these symptoms occur
but I can tell you that if you load a file, close it and
then reopen it; the load time is greatly reduced. It's as
if the system forgets where the files are and has to look
for it again if you don't use them for a while. Is this
a rights issue? A DNS issue? Something I need to change
in Active Directory?

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I am in the same place. Personally I think it is a bug in
sp4. The situation was introduced into my network once
servers moved to sp4. I have one client still under sp3
and I do not have any of the high latency issues found
with a sp4 client and sp4 server when the sp3 client
browses the network. I have also found another thread in
a different forum where admins are struggling with the
same issue with no resolution.

Sorry I could not be of better help.

It is no bug in SP4. Check the ipconfig/all. All servers and clients should
be at level SP4.

Everything points to the servers. All DNS is handled
internally.

The only thing that changed on my network was the servers
went to sp4. Prior to servers going to sp4 there were no
latency issues with sp4 clients browsing the network.
