My client is a healthcare facility with a 10 node network with Win2K
Server and WinXP Pro workstations. The core applications are
specialized, but some of the workstations have MSOffice 97 using
primaryily MSWord and MSExcel.
We recently found that one of the latter workstations was disconnecting
from the network at random times when accessing documents on the server.
Once disconnected from the network, a restart will usually restore the
connection. Checking another workstation accessing documents, sometimes
they would come up rapidly and other times retreiving the document from
the server would take 30-60 sec after the application (local) loaded,
during the delay the hourglass would appear.
The workstations are PIV 2.4GHZ with Intel main boards.
I connected my 2.4GHz laptop to the network drop used by the station
that was dropping off the network and accessed over 20 consecutive
documents with no glitches; the workstation would usually disconnect
after five or fewer accesses. I have OfficeXP on the laptop and thought
that the application may be causing the problem, but installing Office
XP on the workstation did not change the situation.
By a process of elimination, it would seem that the computer itself must
be causing the problem in each case, but I don't see how hardware could
be causing this given that all computers run at roughtly the same rate.
If anyone has seen similar instances of computers disconnecting from
Win2K networks, I would appreciate hearing of their experience.
Thank you.
