slow processing

I am relatively new to computers,i have xp for about a
year but still feel like a total novice,at the moment i
am trying to figure out why my computer takes so long to
react,when i log in and click my name the timer symbol
appears alongside the mouse arrow and if i try to start a
programme it seems to take forever to react,also could
anybody suggest a good book or cd to give me a better
knoledge of my system,thanks.

depending on your software (e.g amount) xp can take a
while to load all the bits and bobs. If you have a lot in
your programs & programs startup folder(removeable
stuff), xp loads these first before you have full control
(e.g msoffice toolbar, messenger(... whatever))... I
think this is what makes xp faster after the loading,
being able to intuitavely load programs like they are
already in memory; as xp has loaded fast access to them.
Gone are the really fast boots when you first got xp!
Still who wants a fast but empty pc? As for books etc,
xp has a fairly good range, including a monthly
magazine... maybe start there... I think flying hours is
probably the best teacher though; use all the controls,
just avoid formatting(erasing) the hard-drive where
possible.
