Slow Playback While Previewing Timeline

I've been using WMM for a while now, making some really nice videos, but no all of a sudden, when I'm previewing my movie, it slows down everytime it switches from one clip to the next, especially when it has a transition. Even without any transitions, the video plays too slow for the music, and sometimes it will skip a clip. I'm not sure if it's trying to catch up or what, but if I press pause and start from the clip I just played, totally different parts of the music will play. Basically, the video is malfunctioning. Does anybody know how to fix this, or at least help make it run faster?
 
Might be the need to clean up and defrag your hard drive.

Or it might be the use of different source files, like MPEG2 clips.
