I have a Compaq Presario 6000 using Windows XP Home
Edition. Responsiveness, when I first purchased the
computer, was very fast. After a couple of weeks, the
performance deteriorated to the level, that the computer
is more of a frustration. Many of the applications sit
on "not responding" for long periods of time before
responding. The email and internet keys on the keyboard
don't work!!

I have had the computer worked on a couple of times and it
works well for a short time and reverts. The repairman
disables a couple of drivers but the problems return.

Hi,

Seems that the drivers in the OS got corrupted and the
system needs a refresh. I suggest you to back up the data
and then go for a fresh installation. this should help.

Try shutting down the indexing service. This totally took
over my CPU usage. Go to control panel > Performance and
Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services, then look
for "Indexing service" and double click. Under startup
type switch to "Disabled". This service only tries to make
searching for files a little faster, but I haven't noticed
any slowdowns since i disabled it.

Don't start shutting down services, though! Check out all
the services info at:
