Slow PCs

I have had reports from several people lately regarding their computers being
very slow. Since there's so many users reporting it I now believe it might
be network related. Unfortunately some of the switches aren't managed, and I
don't even know the IP addresses of some of the ones that look like their
manageable.

I did an IP scan in hopes of being able to determine which ones might be
switches, but unfortunately it's not resolving the hostnames, it's just
coming up as N/A.

Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot what might be going on? Just this past
Sunday I moved DHCP off of the sonicwall and enabled it on the domain
controller, but don't see anything odd going on with it.

create more questions that you maybe has answered or other people can not

My first thought is "Why assume a network problem?"
Network problems cause network performance problems, not "slow computer"
problems.

If you unplug the PC's network cable it is now *really, really* slow,..it
doesn't communicate at all,...does that make the Computer slow?,...probably
not. That is a bit over simplified, but you should get the point.

So you need to make your post more specific about what is really happening
and also specifically what is not happening.

In my case when I open windows explorer, there is a very long pause before my
local drive and mapped network drives show up. I thought it was just my
computer at first, but other people are reporting the same thing as well as
using applications like excel where it takes a long time to save changes.

Another example is MSAccess queries that usually run in seconds are taking 1
1/2 minutes.

I have seen this before in one case it turned out to be computers whose time
was outside the 6 minute window from the domain controller, in another
instance I was able to see from the router that there were 2 devices on the
network competing for the same IP address.

That was at other jobs where I had the appropriate tools and access to
managed switches. Here I don't have that luxury. I can't even determine the
IP addresses of the switches to see if there's a bad NIC out there somewhere.


Another indication that there's something not right on the network is we've
got a swipe card system for employees to come in the doors. When I have to
make updates to add/remove employees from the system, I have to export the
changes to all the doors. I'm getting errors from our remote location that
also uses this door card system stating that the export could not complete
due to a loss of commmunication. I tried it several times before I could get
the export to complete successfully.

You have to find a common denominator. Like the same switch being used or
the same server being used for all the "problem connection" occurances. It
can't just be "everything is bad everywhere" there is no way to troubleshoot
that.

Mapped drives are a BIG problem and are full of performance issues,...you
need to stop using them wherever possible. They will most certainly cause
Explorer to open slowly because the Maps have to scan/inventory the "drive"
contents on all the Maps when Explorer opens. So eliminate the Mapped
Drives. Use UNC Path "Shortcuts" instead.

A single bad nic is not likely to cause something that wide spread.

DNS issues can cause performance problems too if resolution is required or
if authentication is required.

Start examining event logs on the servers and even on clients that are
giving problem.
