Slow operation

I recently purchased a new computer with XP installed. I
have been disappointed in its performance.

The main problem is operating speed, and if it were
consistently slow, this problem would be easier to
address. Sometimes things click along at tolerable
speeds, but other times, processing is interminably slow.
Keeping the disc free of temp files, etc. seems to have
some effect and I am regularly performing disc cleanup.
I've check defrag and the hard drive does not need it.

Checking programs that load at startup, all I can see is
that normal device drivers and services are loading and
when I hit CONT-ALT-DELETE to discontinue a program that
has stopped operating, I don't see any other stuff
operating that I didn't know about.

Most of the programs I have loaded on are older programs
and I wonder if this has something to do with it--but
again the inconsistency of the problem doesn't support
that.No games are included in the programs.

Any help gratefully accepted

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? In Windows Explorer
right click on your C drive and select Properties. How much ram memory?

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

Hope this helps.

With a new computer the page file settings shouldn't
really be a problem but here's a link so you can check and
make sure.
