Running XP Home SP2.

Suddenly it's taking a full 10 secondsor more from the time I
double-click a desktop icon, like Ctrl Panel or My Computer, until
they open.

It ain't spyware, adware,or fragmentation, and I've run Chkdsk.

Can someone suggest something else that I can do?

Since you've apparently checked for malware, it must be something
else. ;-)

First, ask yourself The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't? That will help
narrow the focus for troubleshooting.

Second, please take a few seconds to review the malware removal steps
here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

If you followed similar procedures (including the prep/finishing work)
with similar removal tools, then you're done. If you didn't, then it
would be wise to go through them.

Also check to make sure your hard drive is not in PIO mode. This
information by MVP Hans-Georg Michna will explain/fix that:

You can also do clean-boot troubleshooting to help narrow the focus:
