I have a windows 2000 server, SP4 running as a file server here on our
school domain. When I try to open a file accross the network from
within any application it takes an age to open. An example is a 200kb
spreadsheet that will take 10-12 seconds to open.
Even when browsing through explorer, having browsed to my destination,
it will take about 10 seconds to open the contents pane so I can see
what is contained within the folder.
I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2 and Office 2003. Only recently
started happening, withing last 6 weeks. Has a recent update caused
this ??
Any help appreciated

What antivirus do you run on the server? Make sure that you don't enable
realtime scanning on *outbound* files - only *inbound*.

Is browsing itself slow?

I am running Sophos on the server. I have never noticed this problem
before and we have been running Sophos for about 3 years now. I will
have a look though and make sure your suggestions are looked at.

Yes, browsing through explorer is also slow. I dont know if there is
any relevance to me running Windows XP with SP2 as my workstation. When
I log on locally at the server, there are no problems.

OK...but you didn't answer my question about browsing itself being slow....
Please don't snip out all of the original text to which you're replying - it
will make this thread confusing to many.

Also, if there's any event log error, post it - and mention if you're on a
domain or a workgroup.
