Slow networking with Windows 2000

Hello all,

I'm trying to to sort out a nightmare of a network for a new customer,
one of the problems being thus:

There are 22 PCs networked together to one Windows 2000 server, all of
the clients are also running Windows 2000. Off in another part of the
building, there are 3 PCs (1 running 2000, 2 running XP) that are fed
off another hub, connecting to the rest of the network and the same
server. Both the hub and the cabling have been checked.

The 3 PCs on their own are incredibly slow when connecting to the
network, does anyone have any ideas?

Also, I have installed a broadband connection onto the server, shared
the connection, set all the clients to dynamic IPs and run the
internet connection wizard, but I cannot get internet access from any
of the 25 clients, though it works fine on the server most of the
time, but can grind to a halt (disabling / enabling the connection to
the 'net always sorts the problem).

Since moving to dynamic IP, the clients will also intermittently
disconnect (ipconfig reveals their address is 0.0.0.0) for no reason,
several restarts usually get them running again.

Anyone have any ideas? I've checked everything I can think of, but to
no avail.

Thanks in advance,

Dave.

You aren't exceeding the 10-base-T maximum cable run length of 100
meters here, are you?

This kind of problem is often traced to firewall software. Ports 67 &
68 to the DHCP server should be left open so that the IP lease can be
renewed periodically. Temporarily try disabling firewall to see if
problem goes away.

Good Luck,
John
